Happy Chinese New Year!

This is Xander, the smallest of the babies here at the Starfish Foster Home in Xian (www.thestarfishfosterhome.org) where I am spending my 3 week vacation doing volunteer work. He and his fluffy lady friends wish you a very happy year of the Rabbit! I was all excited about it being the year of the rabbit because I am a rabbit but then I found out that that means it's supposed to be a very UNLUCKY year for me! Eek! A Chinese friend advised me to wear red underwear all year. Assumedly not the same pair, but I can't be sure.

I will now sing you a song my Chinese teacher taught me for the occasion (it's to the tune of O Clementine, believe it or not):

Xin nian hao ya!
Xin nian hao ya!
Zhu fu da jia xin nian hao
Women chang ge
Women tiao wu
Zhu fu da jia xin nian hao!

I'm pretty sure you don't have to worry about tones when you sing. I don't anyway. Of couse, I don't worry about tones most of the time which is probably why no one understands me...
Anyway, here's a translation for anyone whose Chinese isn't as great as mine:

Happy New Year!
Happy New Year!
We wish everyone happy New Year!
We sing
We dance
We wish everyone a happy New Year!

The traditional food to eat for New Year is dumplings. Some of the nannies spent quite sometime today making dumplings for everyone.

This afternoon a fellow volunteer and I took the bus into the city to see what festivities we could find. Here are some photos I took of decorations in the city:

I will post a little bit more about Starfish soon. Probably.
In the meantime have a lovely lunar new year!
