Thee, Stranded Horse is the work of Yann Encre, a native of Normandy whose previous recorded output was under the name of Encre. More of a group project, Encre used acoustic instruments and samplers and quickened pulses in France with their first two albums. Thee, Stranded Horse is at the same time more stripped-down, more simple, yet also more complex, more subtle, beguiling and shaded, in the way that only the most potent traditional folk music can be. Playing kora and nylon-strung acoustic guitar - sometimes simultaneously - Thee, Stranded Horse is a loom on which Yann weaves together the modes of French chanson, African polyrhythms, Delta blues, pastoral psychedelia and traditional folk song shapes.
@ The Green Man Festival, Brecon, Wales
If you are going to get soaked anywhere, the Green Man festival is the place to do it. Although the green fields of Glanusk Park quickly become a mud bath, the beauty of the surroundings is undiminished; fairy lights sparkle in conifers, candyfloss mist smothers Sugar Loaf Mountain and bubbles fill the air. In the Green Man Cafe, it's the folk upstarts who shine. Thee, Stranded Horse, aka Yann Encre, is a serious young Frenchman who plays acoustic guitar and kora simultaneously, his dark songs demanding, and getting, hushed respect. Thee, Stranded Horse is an intriguing proposition, an unassuming young gentleman possessing a dextrous set of fingers which allow him to craft dense, rippling fields of sound from an unusual array of stringed instruments. [. . .] The likes of 'So Goes the Pulse' and 'Tainted Days' stick long in the memory. SANDMAN, DECEMBER 2007
The itinerary for Thee, Stranded Horse's July tour in China has changed again: overall there are now 14 dates and Yann will now visit seven cities in all, with dates in Changsha, Guangzhou, Shenzen, Nanjing, Shanghai and Tianjin, followed by a mini-tour of the Beijing area, with no less than seven shows in the vicinity. For details and venues, head to the LIVE section.
Also confirmed are some European dates book-ending the China trip: Thee, Stranded Horse will play LAWM (Lancaster, 21 June), the Fusion Festival (Larz, Germany, 26 June), the European EXPO in Zaragoza as a duo with Ballake Sissoko (1 August) and Niort, France (23 August).
